Earning Your APR is a Valuable Experience
PRSA is celebrating Accreditation Month in April to draw attention to the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) program. The APR designation is awarded to public relations professionals who demonstrate a commitment to the profession, broad knowledge and strategic perspective.
Currently, 55 members of the Central Iowa PRSA Chapter have achieved their APR.
I started thinking about the accreditation process back in 2004 after practicing public relations here in central Iowa for about eight years.
I began my 15-week class work in January 2005, along with about 10 or so other chapter members. After the formal sessions were completed, a smaller group of us continued to meet and study for the Readiness Review and exam on our own.
In August 2005, I took the APR exam after passing the Readiness Review. It was an incredible feeling when I received my letter from the National Office saying I had passed the exam and was now accredited in public relations.
Going through the APR process was an extraordinary professional development experience. Not only did I gain confidence in my skills and abilities in public relations, but I also gained friendships with several chapter members. These are people I can now turn to with PR questions, ideas and suggestions.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the APR process, please feel free to call me at 284-4747 or send me an e-mail message at Darin.Leach@ia.usda.gov.
We hope to have enough interest from chapter members for a 15-week class work session starting this fall.
It is recommended that you have at least five years of professional experience before pursing your APR.

PRSA Chapters Partner with National in First-ever All-Chapter Survey – Your Participation is Important
Last year, PRSA conducted a survey to identify which products and services deliver the greatest value to members. Among its findings, the survey determined that members derive significant benefits from their local Chapter affiliations. Taking that research to a new dimension, PRSA is now conducting the first-ever all-Chapter survey to focus on which Chapter services members value most. All PRSA members are invited to participate in the short online survey. Members who complete the survey by Tuesday, April 7, will be eligible to win Amazon gift cards.
Results of this survey, including information specific to each Chapter, will be shared with Chapter leaders later this spring. In addition, PRSA plans to present the survey results at the 2009 Leadership Rally in June. The data collected will help PRSA identify and share best practices to continue to build value and loyalty at the Chapter and National levels. Additionally, PRSA will gain new insights into member demographics and salary information that will be shared with the membership. |

Teacher Tools 4 Tomorrow
In last month’s newsletter, we described the Spring PR event benefiting Teacher Tools 4 Tomorrow. This nonprofit organization provides donated school supplies to eligible Iowa schools, or those with 70 percent or more of their student population on the free/reduced lunch program.
Members were asked to join in the effort to support Teacher Tools 4 Tomorrow and donate any gently used or new school supplies by bringing them to our PRSA monthly luncheons or the 2009 Institute.
KCCI interviewed the Executive Director of Teacher Tools 4 Tomorrow and aired the segment on their evening newscast on Monday, March 30. To learn more about the project, read the article on KCCIs Web site or the article that was posted in the Central Iowa PRSA March newsletter.
If you have questions about donating to this organization, please contact Andrea James at 515-223-1383, or Lindsey Maas at 515-284-4444. |
