Letter from the President:
Welcome to 2010
The beginning of another year and a new decade

It amazes me how fast 10 years can fly by. The fears of Y2K are still fairly fresh memories as I wondered if the power would turn off in my house as 1999 came to an end, or if my car would start that first day of 2000.

When I look, however, at all the changes that have actually taken place over the past 10 years, I realize that it is time to begin 2010. As communications professionals, we live in many of these changes everyday through 24-hour news cycles, the advancement of mobile communication devices and the explosion of social media outlets.

I challenge you to take steps now to advance your professional development so you can be an even more valuable team member, co-worker, supervisor, educator, or leader in the years and decades to come.

The Public Relations Society of America offers a study course and exam called the Accreditation in Public Relations, or APR. I made a personal commitment to this program a few years back.  My decision to pursue my APR was career changing and gave me additional confidence in my communications skills.

In addition, if you are an APR with 20 years of experience, have demonstrated exceptional skills as a practitioner and want to further your professional development, PRSA offers a College of Fellows program.

One of the best ways to get the most out of your PRSA membership in 2010 and beyond is to attend our monthly meetings and professional development sessions.

Nearly 20 members and guests attended December’s free Webinar on interacting with social media through an online newsroom.  I was so impressed with what I learned that I forwarded my notes on to my supervisor the next day.

Finally, I wish all of you great luck as you begin working on PRIME Award entries in the coming weeks.

All the best to everyone in 2010!

Darin Leach, APR
President, Central Iowa PRSA Chapter

Scholarships Now Available for Professionals and Students
Now is the time to get your application in for one of the chapter's scholarships.  Available to students and professionals, these scholarships aid in the pursuit of public relations education.

Education Scholarships
For more than 25 years, the chapter has recognized a student with the Ferne Bonomi and Dr. Henry Milam Undergraduate Scholarship.  Four years ago, the chapter added a graduate degree scholarship for practicing public relations professionals.
  • Undergraduate – Are you a PRSSA member looking for some extra money to pay for school?  $1,500 is available.  Complete this scholarship application.
  • Advanced Degree – Are you a PRSA member pursuing an advanced degree?  $500 is available.  Complete this scholarship application.
Professional Development
The chapter also provides a $500 professional development scholarship that can be used in many different ways to further your career.  Here are some ways the professional development scholarship can bring value to you:
  • Reimburse your expenses for attending PRSA chapter or national events, such as National Conference, monthly luncheons, Webinars and teleseminars, or on-site conferences that further your public relations expertise.
  • Use the scholarship to help fund your pursuit of the APR process.  The money can be used to buy books, pay for study courses and the testing fee.
  • Pay for your national and chapter memberships.
These are just a few of the ways the professional development scholarship can be used.  Be creative and give us your proposal for this scholarship.  Complete this application for the professional development scholarship.

All scholarship applications are due on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010.  Mailing information is found on each of the applications.  If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Sankey at 515-248-3815.

General News:
Wanted: E-Newsletter Editor in Service to Our Country
If you’re looking for an opportunity to support our military men and women and the businesses that employ them, read on.

The Iowa Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) is looking for a volunteer to produce a quarterly e-newsletter.  First, some background.

The National Guard and Reserve comprise almost half of our nation’s total military force.  Today’s citizen soldiers face unique challenges in balancing their military and civilian careers.  As deployments have increased in both number and length, those challenges have grown.

A Federal law (USERRA) protects the job rights of employees who perform military service.  One way we inform both military employees and their employers of their rights and responsibilities is through a quarterly e-newsletter.  You can see copies of the newsletter in the news section of the Iowa ESGR Web site: www.iowaesgr.com. This position is not site specific.

If you would like to know more about the e-newsletter, ESGR and how you can be involved, I look forward to talking with you. Don’t hesitate.  We need you now.

Iowa ESGR Public Affairs Chair
