Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has been an excellent partner and first quarter sponsor for PRSA Central Iowa chapter. Yet their contributions to the public relations industry extend far beyond professional sponsorship – Wellmark was a 2018 PRIME Award winner for their MATCH Grant Social Campaign, showcasing their PR talents and expertise.

The Wellmark Foundation gives out two MATCH grants each year to a qualified nonprofit organization in either Iowa or South Dakota; one Large MATCH Grant for up to $100,000 and must be matched at 100 percent, and one Small MATCH for up to $25,000 is matched at 50 percent. The Wellmark Foundation had a goal to increase overall exposure to the grant programs while improving the quality of applications received.

They created objectives in a public relations plan to achieve this communication goals and identified a strategy of using Facebook as the primary driver to engage new qualifying organizations. Through paid social media with tight targeting parameters to reach the right audience within Iowa and South Dakota, they reached over 51,000 people and achieved 586 clicks to their grant applications. They shattered their objective goals by receiving 111 total quality applications (91 percent increase when the goal was 20 percent).

This is just one of many examples of the strategic and creative public relations work being tackled by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. We're lucky to have them as not only a sponsor, but a valuable member of our PRSA Central Iowa community.
