What You’ll Do: As the Public Relations Manager, you will be responsible for developing and implementing integrated and measurable public relations and communications strategies that support IFBF’s strategic plan to enhance and promote a favorable image of farmers/agriculture, IFBF and its programs and services. You will:

  • Identify and create timely, relevant external storytelling opportunities that promote a positive image to key audiences including consumers, decision makers, business leaders, members, etc.
  • Initiate and implement proactive public relations messages, strategies and campaigns, including the development of a variety of communications materials, (such as online stories, blogs, news releases, Q&As, talking points, backgrounders, scripts, speeches, etc.), that support IFBF.
  • Develop strong relationships with local, state and select national media contacts to proactively drive positive news coverage for IFBF and key agricultural issues. You will serve as an organization spokesperson on select issues as directed.
  • Create strategic messaging, media training and provide public relations counsel for internal staff and county volunteers in preparation for interviews and events with media and influencers. You will create and implement public relations materials and training for county Farm Bureau’s and IFBF’s F.A.R.M. Team to increase the public’s trust in today’s farming practices.
  • Create and implement issues management strategies as necessary and monitor key issues that impact Farm Bureau, agriculture or rural Iowa. You will prepare and distribute responses when necessary.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across the organization, the agriculture industry and the food system as directed to develop and implement communications strategies that positively promote farmers/agriculture.
  • Prepare and analyze media reports and adjust strategies accordingly. You will assist in development and implementation of organization and department strategic plans.
  • Oversee the public relations staff of 2, providing leadership and performance evaluations.


In this role it’s important to be flexible, able to manage multiple priorities and have a positive can-do attitude, as there will be other duties as requested.

What It Takes to Join Our Team:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field preferred) plus 8 years relevant experience required.
  • Public relations/communications regarding agriculture and issues facing rural Iowa preferred.
  • Proven experience in developing, implementing and demonstrating results of successful public relations strategies.
  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Must be adept at creating clear, succinct written materials quickly.
  • Experience in issues management is required.
  • Media relations experience across multiple platforms (digital, print and broadcast).
  • Prior experience managing direct reports and/or managing project teams.
  • Must be aware of and adhere to applicable EEO/AA guidelines.
  • Some travel (<25%) and limited lifting is required.
  • Work from our office in West Des Moines, IA.
